Lviv (Lemberg), the cultural and spiritual center of Western Ukraine, is preparing to defend itself from Russian attack. Residents of the city awake to see an unusual picture for them: builders and restorers  removing ancient statues that cannot be dismantled from the roofs - wrapped in protective film. On ancient cathedrals, builders install protective shields made of wood, metal lattices, and other protective materials. Through work such as this, Lviv’s residents hope that the historic center will remain intact.
